Behind bars for 15 months

Electrician’s reign of terror

- Stephen Houston

An electrician who terrorised the women in his life has been jailed for 15 months.

Astonishingly one of Grant Campbell’s girlfriends Lauren Templeton still wants to set up home with him when he gets out.

Campbell, 22, punched her, spat on her face and pulled her hair out in clumps, Ayr Sheriff Court heard on Thursday.

His previous partner Nicole Anderson, 18, was left in terror after two worrying incidents in Troon - one at her parents’ home in leafy Harling Drive.

Campbell had been dating her since she was 13 but his boozing and drug taking sparked his temper tantrums.

In the first incident at their flat in Portland Street he pushed a heavy motorbike on top of her and refused to pull it off despite her screams.

Scott Toal, prosecuting, said an argument flared and on the landing he had pushed the bike onto her, leaving her with arm and leg bruising.

He said: “She was in a lot of pain and it was too heavy to move herself. She was screaming and the accused was doing nothing to assist.”

Another person intervened after pleas to Campbell to help failed.

The second incident involving Miss Anderson happened as they were in bed in Harling Drive and he thrust her face into a pillow and tried to strangle her.

Mr Toal said she had struggled to get her breath back and was left with red marks on her neck.

Miss Anderson then locked herself in the toilet and phoned a friend and as Campbell banged the door demanding entry and friend heard him say: “I didn’t mean to strangle you that hard.”

In a further incident after a night’s drinking at Live@ Troon two years ago Campbell kicked off at 1.40am at a takeaway in West Portland Street.

He spat on girls Robyn Johnstone and Jennifer McAuley, warning them: “You don’t know who are you dealing with.”

The court heard his new girlfriend Lauren Templeton had driven him “into the middle of nowhere” to get cigarettes on August 31 last year. Near Loch Doon he ordered her to drive home, saying: “You will do as I say.”

But when she came across roadworks she tried to get the attention of workers by rolling down the window.

It was then that he punched her and spat on the side of her face and pulled her hair.

Later a friend saw her hysterical with a nose bleed, a lump on her head and her hair falling out in clumps.

She then told a paramedic: “I was punched in the face and had my hair pulled by my boyfriend.”

Campbell has now been banned from going anywhere near Miss Anderson for the next three years.

But no harrassment ordered was put in place for Miss Templeton as she “wants to reside with him.”

Mandy Stewart, defending said: “He recognises the very serious situation he finds himself in today.

“He fully accepts he has anger issues, exacerbated by alcohol and illicit substances.”

Sheriff Scott Pattison said despite a well- made argument by Miss Stewart, it was too serious to avoid jail.

He told Campbell: “You have demonstrated you are a a danger to the women in your life. You clearly need help with your inability to control your mood and temper.”
