Fly- tippers ruin clean- up work

Tidy team’s plea for sponsors

- Mike McLean

The clean- up campaigners at Tarbolton Woods were shocked to find that the area has again been used for fly- tipping.

Local resident Tony Hamilton, out walking with son Paul, discovered a fly- tipped bedstead, just ahead of the group’s latest assault on the area. He said: “Paul has worked hard with all the other children who volunteer for the campaign, and was really upset.”

Undaunted, the team got on with the job, and it was the kids who dealt with the bed, carrying it to the skip which South Ayrshire Council had provided.

Young volunteer Jamie Frew said: “We are very upset that someone could do this as they must know that we are working hard.”

However, the group was encouraged to have 12 new volunteers, young and old, come along and sign up to help. With 31 people on site properly equipped for the job, they shifted an amazing 2.2 tons of rubbish from the woods.

Donations continue to come from companies who support the group. The volunteers all used the heavy duty gloves supplied by safety equipment company Arco, and the local Key Store stepped in when the volunteers’ water ran out, giving them two crates of reviving water.

Jim Williamson, from Tarbolton Landfill Site, has also been in touch and has kindly set up an account for the campaign at Hamilton Brothers to enable them to get much- needed equipment.

Committee member and Hamilton Brothers employee Garry McNeillie said: “I was telling Jim about the campaign and he was very interested. Secretary Sammy Brown sent Jim an email detailing what we have achieved so far and Jim came to our meeting and told the group he was happy to support us.

“It’s an amazing gesture, and we cannot thank him and Tarbolton Landfill Site enough.”

The team would also like to thank South Ayrshire Council for their support, and they will continue to work in partnership with them, but the campaigners now feel able to stand on their own two feet.

Sammy Brown said: “The time has come for us to seek our own sponsorship and funding to continue the campaign, so if there are any companies out there who can come on board to supply us with a skip for phase 5 to go ahead, we’d love to hear from them.”
