A nation is set to celebrate her reign
On September 9 2015 the Queen will overtake Queen Victoria to become Britain’s longest reigning monarch with a reign of more than 63 years 216 days.
Turning 90 in 2016, Elizabeth has devoted her life to serving the people of the United Kingdom.
And the nation will beam with pride on September 9 as she surpasses the 63 years, seven months and two days that Queen Victoria sat on the throne.
A truly historic moment for the people of Scotland.
It is hard to believe that she was not destined to be Queen until her father became king when she was 10 years old, Elizabeth has become the world’s most famous monarch.
Reigning through more than six decades of rapid change in the United Kingdom Elizabeth has remained a stable, politically neutral and unifying presence as 12 Prime Ministers have come and gone during her reign of the United Kingdom.
She remains Head of State in Britain and 15 other Commonwealth Realms and is head of the 53- member state Commonwealth.
The Queen, who has been keen to keep any celebrations to a minimum, would normally be taking her traditional summer break at her private Scottish home, Balmoral.
But in a concession to the historic significance of the day, she has agreed to mark the occasion by opening the £ 294 million Scottish Borders Railway and taking a steam train ride to mark the occasion.
There has been speculation that a celebratory private event is planned but it is understood that in keeping with the Queen’s wishes it will be a normal working day for the monarch with no special dinner party.
To mark her reign as monarch, The Royal Mint announced a limited edition commemorative coin worth £ 20 which will show five different portraits of the Queen which have featured on coins during her 63 years.
