Alan Shaw Bake and raise Cash for Kids
Of all the reality TV shows that have been on our screens over the years, there’s one that really seems to have captured everyone’s imagination and has become a runaway – if slightly unexpected – success: The Great British Bake Off.
It had humble beginnings, tucked away in the schedules as a competition to find the best amateur baker in the country but by last year was attracting averages audiences of over ten million – that’s three million more than the highly advertised return of the X Factor.
As with all programmes of this nature, it hasn’t been without its controversies, least of all last year’s ‘ bingate’ where a contestant’s Baked Alaska failed to set so he chucked it in the bin amid claims of sabotage.
Then there have been accusations of smutty language from the presenters including terms such as “soggy bottom”, “he loves his buns” and “stop touching your dough balls”.
If anything, all that did was make the show even more popular and, as a result, has seen a resurgence in home baking.
You’ve probably noticed it yourself; shops are selling more ingredients and I bet every workplace has at least one person who regularly brings in cakes they’ve made.
Maybe you’ve been inspired to dig out the cake tins yourself. If you haven’t yet, West FM is giving you a good reason to next Friday, September 18 as we hold our annual Cash for Kids Big Bake Day.
So whether your favourite baked goodies are cupcakes, fruit tarts, Victoria sponges or even a massive gateau, why not dig out the ingredients and get baking!
Once it’s risen to perfection you can sell your wares to your workmates, school friends, neighbours and family to help us raise as much as possible for disadvantaged children in Ayrshire.
Even if you’re a complete novice and have never baked before in your life, this is a perfect opportunity to get involved and give it a try.
I’ve even discovered a recipe for chocolate cakes that are ready in just 60 seconds using a microwave. Register now on the Cash for Kids pages at westfm. co. uk/ charity or call Lorraine on 01292 270508.
