Mum hosed down raging cage fighter

Former MMA ace admits causing ruckus

- Sarah Hilley

A fuming cage fighter was hosed down by a plucky mum after he started a ruckus outside her home.

Former mixed martial arts ace William McCracken, 38, turned up while Nan Hastie, 55, was out gardening in Cumnock.

Bizarrely dressed in cage fighting gloves, a vest and shorts he flew into a rage and demanded to see her son Mark on May 16.

But the protective mother said he wasn’t in, Ayr Sheriff Court heard on Tuesday.

Depute fiscal Stephen McLean said: “Nan Hastie was extremely afraid and continued to tell the accused her son was not present.”

All the time her son was upstairs and was advised to stay in by her husband.

Shouting and swearing, McCracken threatened to kill martial arts centre owner Mark, Mr McLean said.

He then took his temper out on Mark’s car instead, punching and kicking the wing mirror and passenger door.

McCracken’s lawyer Robert Logan said his client lost the plot after terrorised Nan turned the hose on him during the row at Cairn Court.

Mr Logan said: “Mrs Hastie turned the hose on him. At that point he accepts he may have lost his temper.” The next day the former professional fighter again lost his rag when confronted by police at a friend’s house at Wylie Crescent.

It was decided a total of seven police officers needed to be sent because of McCracken’s brute strength and combat skills, Mr McLean told the court.

The depute fiscal said officers found him “extremely aggressive” and again sporting mixed martial art gloves.

They drew their batons and struggled to restrain the brute who resisted arrest.

Eventually they got him into a police car after strapping and handcuffing him.

McCracken confessed to struggling violently with officers and resisting arrest.

He also admitted acting aggressively towards Nan Hastie, shouting and swearing and threatening a member of her family.

He pled guilty to punching and kicking the wing mirror and door of a car outside.

Mr Logan said that his client had been seeking help for his addiction problems.

Sheriff Des Leslie jailed McCracken, of Glenramskill Avenue, for one year and five months.

He said: “It is very unfortunate These are matters that only you can address. I can only do so much for you.”
