getting out at 50 as it is at 70. If folk use their heads and move to let people in then there would be no problems.”

And Peter Macgregor said: “18 objectors surely cannot make the rules.”

However, Rachel Macaulay said: “No. It should stay as it is. I live in Symington and the slip toads are not long enough for coming out onto 70mph traffic. Plus coming out of Hansel Village, there is no slip road.”

Stacey Allan agreed: “Try coming out of Hansel Village with cars flying by at 70mph. They ran out of money and didn’t do a connecting road to the flyovers. It’s unsafe at 50 so the short stretch at Hansel should remain.”

Brian Jamieson asked: “Exactly how much time is saved going from Monkton roundabout to the end of the 50mph if it is returned to 70mph? About five minutes.”

However, Colin Farquharson said: “With a heavy heart - no. The most tedious bit of road ever is between Monkton Roadabout and Hansel but as some have already said, slip roads on and exiting Hansel are just not safe enough to warrant it - and we all know 70 really means occasionally 80+, at least a reduced limit keeps people aware - especially those unfamiliar to the area.”

Liz McGinley concluded: “Leave as is. I used to come on at Bogend Toll and saw too many farm vehicles and horse boxes coming on within this section - bound to cause an accident. The fact that there have been less since 50 introduced should show that it works. If the choice is between causing accidents and taking an extra couple of minutes to get through it, I know what I’d choose.”
