Girls’ work to fill gap at Barony

-

Auchinleck Barony Two pupils worked on a project for the Barony A Frame Trust. Art and design teacher Alison MacVicar said: “A small but enthusiastic group of senior pupils from the creative industries course set about investigating and developing ideas for this project. The team eventually decided to design and create two glass mosaics to replace the missing pieces of art work on the concrete plinths under the A frame. I was fairly tentative about this project as my pupils, Nicole Brown and Kelsie Druggan, were about to embark on a very complex and difficult technique. Mosaic work needs a lot of patience and focus. I needn’t have worried as both Nicole and Kelsie were absolute stars. They were enthusiastic, hard- working pupils who very quickly picked up on mosaic methods and techniques and threw themselves into this project. Both girls eventually got to the stage where they were so good at what they were doing that on occasions they had to correct me.” The two mosaics will be installed at the Barony A Frame by the end of June. Art trip 50 S2 and 3 pupils went to Kelvingrove Art Gallery in Glasgow to take part in the annual drawing competition. Drawings included wild animals, replicas of famous artworks and contemporary sculptures. The art staff were very proud of everyone who attended. Maths In the annual pi competition pupils memorise the number pi to as many decimal places as possible. The school has never had anyone completing the full sheet before but this year Lucy Arlow, Ailey Porter and Ava Cook managed it: 203 decimal places. Amy Biggans and Zoe Strachan also did very well. The school also took part in the UK Maths Trust Competition. Isaac Woodford, Jorda Mouzer, Laura Purdie, Caitlin Mora, Jordan Beck, Kerr Sloan and Scott Fowler all achieved a bronze award in the intermediate chal- lenge. Thomas Mangan got a silver in this section and was awarded best in school. Callum McCoskrie, Ben Johnston, Ava Cook, Charlie Devlin, James Marshall, Alice Gemmil, Ailey Porter, Ellie Holmes, Frank Andrew, Luke Cameron Cooper and Alana McNab all achieved a bronze award in the junior callenge. Arron Lindsay, Zac Cameron and Amber Hart achieved a silver in the junior callenge. Emma Gemmell in S1 achieved a gold award in the junior section and because of her high score has been invited to take part in the next round, called the Junior Kangaroo. This is the furthest an Auchinleck pupil has ever gone. Boswell Book Festival Pupils from Mr McEwan’s S1 maths class had a very busy afternoon at the Boswell Book Festival. Some of the group were invited to help Kjartan Poskitt, author of the Murderous Maths books, with his puzzles and tricks. They also had a chance to plan a medical story reflecting James Boswell’s interest in science and enjoyed a tour of Dumfries House. Race for Life Congratulations to all the girls who travelled to Glasgow on Sunday to take part in the Race for Life. The girls thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Starlight Walk A team of teachers, office staff and classroom assistants took part in the Ayrshire Hospice Starlight Walk in Ayr. The weather was kind to the group and the band of nine all completed the 13mile route. The current total raised is just over £ 800. The team members were Miss Brien, Mrs Cumming, Mrs Cook, Miss Smith, Mrs Dickson, Mrs McLaren, Ms Medhurst, Mrs Milton and Mrs Wallace. School of rugby The under- 15 girls kicked things off at Lenzie Academy with a fine display of attacking rugby and a strong win. The S1 side were next on and in the previous fixture had lost 11- 0. The first half was a tight affair, with the half- time score 4- 0 to the home side. In the second half Jack Bruhn rounded his defender and scored the try of the game. Jack then appeared to score a second try but this was not given and the game finished 8- 1 to Lenzie. At Lenzie Rugby Club the S2 side drew 26- 26 in an end- to- end game and the under- 15s lost 14- 12. This week Duncanrig travel down to Broomfield to complete the IQA Summer League. Handball The S2 boys travelled to the Scottish handball finals at Ravenscraig in Motherwell, where they made it to the final game against ( 64 games unbeaten) Kelvinside Academy. The game was endtoend excitement but, at 8- 8 with two minutes to go, the fatigue of playing five games earlier in the day started to take its toll on both teams. The Kelvinside goalkeeper pulled of some fantastic saves and that turned out to be the difference as Auchinleck were beaten 12- 8. Top goal scorers were Matthew Morrison and Ruairidh Airlie. Although injured, Luke Cameron Cooper went to support as team captain.
