Star pupils with bright future on the Horizons

-

Four enterprising pupils are heading to a national business competition after sweeping the board at Young Enterprise Scotland’s Ayrshire Awards.

Kilmarnock Academy sixth year students Jordan Muir, Heather Taylor, Robyn McGhee and David Gibson developed and published a survival guide for primary seven pupils transitioning to secondary school.

Their prototype company - Horizon Pages - has now sold hundreds of copies with forward orders already being taken for 2017.

Horizon Pages joined teams from across Ayrshire for the Young Enterprise Awards, and took home seven of the eleven awards up for grabs, including the prestigious overall winner title of Ayrshire Company of the Year.

Managing Director Jordan said: “We are all immensely proud to win the Ayrshire award.

“We all worked very hard and the success of Horizon Pages is really down to the great teamwork in our group and to the support we’ve received both from our teacher and our business advisers.”

Now in its 42nd year, Young Enterprise Scotland sees teams of fifth and six year pupils establish and run their own businesses.

They are supported by teachers and advisers drawn from the local business community.

“Schools across the country participate, with each regional winner going on to compete for the title of ‘ Scottish Company of the Year’ and the chance to vie for the UK title at Young Enterprise’s national finals in London.”

More than 90 young people were involved in the Ayrshire programme and gathered at The Fenwick Hotel for the annual awards ceremony hosted by West FM’s Michael Smith.

The Provosts of East, North and South Ayrshire attended and key speaker, Celtic Football Club’s Adrian Filby, applauded the entrepreneurship demonstrated by all of the finalists.

The night also saw awards going to teams from Kilmarnock’s Grange and James Hamilton Academies, Stewarton Academy, Troon’s Marr College and Ayr’s Belmont Academy.

Brian Hill, chair of the Ayrshire branch of Young Enterprise Scotland, added: “Once again, Ayrshire’s young people have excelled themselves developing and pursuing a diverse range of enterprises, exploring and building their skills whilst gaining invaluable business and learning experiences.

“Horizon Pages have an excellent business, and I wish Jordan, Heather, Robyn and David every success in the Scottish finals and in their future studies and careers.”
