Go run and feel good

-

I’ve had one of those weeks where I honestly don’t think I would have made it through without running.

I think only fellow runners will understand that feeling of clarity you get after going out for a good run after a stressful day.

Well, actually scientists have come up with a theory as to why running is so good for clearing the head.

Researchers in America have proven that taking part in vigorous aerobic exercise ( hard enough to make you sweat), can actually trigger the growth of new brain cells in the hippocampus – the area of the brain associated with memory.

And once you’ve finished running, there is increased blood flow to the frontal lobe area of the brain – which is associated with planning and clear thinking.

So, that would explain how even when you’re physically and mentally exhausted after a tough day at work, going for a run in the fresh air gives you a fresh energy boost, a spring in your step and restores your clarity of mind.

Similarly, there’s nothing like a brisk run in the morning to set you up for the day ahead.

And if that’s not enough, the existence of the ‘ runners’ high’ has also been verified by science. Apparently vigorous exercise triggers the release of chemicals which mimic the action of opioids and cannabis.

Of course, us runners have known this all along – we don’t need science to prove it to us.

But I suppose it gives us some ammunition for when the doubters tell us we’re off our heads.

And if anyone out there is still wondering whether running is really for them, there’s another couple of reasons why you should give it a go.

And despite my attempt to jinx it last week, the sun is still shining – so what’s stopping you?

Go and get your fix of running and your mind and body ( and your other half!) will thank you for it!

Jog on.
