Why we’re all barking mad about our pets
So is it long, short, medium or a short crop, silky smooth or deep curls, blonde, brown, black or even red with patches of white? How do you like yours? There is one topic that starts a great conversation in the salon and that is our love of our pets.
It was estimated last year that the pet population in the UK was around 58.4 million with around 8.5 million dogs - that’s a number that 133 countries don’t even have in their population.
So we really are a nation of pet lovers and the number only grows each year.
Our family pets are now very much part of the family and pet dogs bring a unique quality with them that each of us is drawn to.
They unite us and strangers are more likely to stop and say hello when you are out with your four legged friend - and what a choice we have, with over 340 recognised breeds in the world and then all the mixed breeds.
From Tea Cup Yorkies to Great Danes, I have to admit I have always admired service dogs and the hours of training that goes into creating , their unique skills.
I can only imagine the bond between a Guide Dog and their owner, what trust.
And then you have the ones who keep us safe at airports and border control sniffing out explosives and drugs or the frontline service dogs who keep the military and police safe in there duties then there’s the pet therapy pooches who visit care homes.
It has been well proven that the companionship of a pet can add years to your life, lowers blood pressure and eases the burden of bereavement.
One thing that, from a hairstylist’s point of view, makes me smile is the full range of shampoos and conditioners and grooming rushes available - even doggy cologne to keep your pup looking ace.
And every type of accessory is available from diamond studded collars, wax jackets and even little boots to keep all four paws clean,
It’s no surprise that one pet food company sells over £ 131 million worth a year.
My favourite childhood film was Lassie and in later life I stood in a queue with little kids to meet the star and her handler at Universal Studios in California.
Ultimately our love of dogs unites us with their unconditional love for us and when we sadly lose them to old age or illness we are heartbroken and mourn their passing.
And without sounding barking mad there are pet psychics to help contact Fido. And although I have never done this, it is something I wouldn’t rule out doing in the future.
