- Stephen Houston

IMPOSING One of the real trophy mansions of Troon has just gone on the market.

Such is the appeal of gracious Southwood House it is unlikely to stay there for long.

Deep pockets are required to buy any property in the town’s stockbroker belt.

And to be king and queen of Southwoods you need upwards of £ 2.25 million.

There’s no better time to come to market with trees and plants emerging into full bloom and The Open championship a pitch from the end of the garden.

Top Ayr agent Donald Ross Residential is marketing the five bedroom mansion and its four- and- half acres of completely private grounds.

And as Donald Ross Residential says: “This magnificent residence occupies probably the best location within the west coast of Scotland.”

Views over Royal Troon are then rewarded by the sea from this B- listed John A Campbell villa dating to 1905.

It is entered via the wooded and quiet Southwood Road and through ornate CUEING UP metal gates hung from imposing obelisktopped gate pillars.

Southwood is built in the Arts and Crafts/ Scots Vernacular style with some “very fine blue- grey freestone dressings,” according to the listings register.

The grand entrance door features some fine carved stone above. BARONIAL HALL

Craftsmanship from a bygone era is still in evidence as owners have retained character features such as wood panelling and marquetry flooring.

The drawing room is 25- foot by 17- foot and has a barrel vaulted ceiling.

Two vast conservatories and a traditional billiards room add to the already significant public areas.

One of the conservatories is known as the orangery and this is through double doors from the kitchen, perfect for a sunny breakfast.

On the third level there are two handy attic rooms. In all Southwood is 6630 square feet of fine living.
