MARCH ON TO SAVE HOUSE

Campaign steps up a gear

- Stuart Wilson

Hundreds are set to hit the streets of Prestwick this Sunday for a historic march of defiance.

Their message: “Save Malcolm Sargent House.”

In an unprecedented move, protestors will shut down the town’s Main Street with their demonstration.

And they will swarm towards the closure- threatened House for an emotional beach- front rally.

Police and council chiefs have taken the rare step of closing the town’s busy thoroughfare for the event.

Organisers hope a huge turnout will send the strongest message yet to CLIC Sargent bosses who are bidding to close the holiday home in a bid to save cash.

House volunteer Eileen Granger, who has helped raise £ 400,000 for the Prestwick base in a decade, is urging people of all ages to join them.

She said: “This will be a peaceful demonstration but a very powerful one.

“The indication is that lots of people plan to attend and it will be amazing to see everyone marching towards the House.

“We plan to send the bosses at CLIC Sargent a very clear message that this House cannot be lost.”

The demo will leave from the town’s Ambassador Indoor Bowling Club at 12.30pm and head down to the Main Street.

From there, protestors will head towards Station Road before taking a left down Links Road and congregating in front of the House.

The bowling club will be open from 10am for free tea, coffee and biscuits and volunteers Billy Herd and Brian Rowan will deliver a presentation on 25 years at the House. The walk itself will last for around half an hour.

Eileen added: “Everyone is coming together for this.

“Owen Kerr Signs have kindly donated a giant banner and we’ve had so many other offers of help and support. It promises to be a big day and it will be great to see as many people there as possible.”
