Hot Rod in wrong part of Ayrshire
Ayr crying out for major venue
Quo and Deacon Blue to town.
I understand they even tried to land Rod himself for the 100 th anniversary of the racecourse.
But when Stewart’s agents came back with a number that had more digits than Iain Ferguson’s mobile - Rod was sadly declared a non- runner.
I’ve spoken to some music moguls who say there is a niche for a 5000 or 6000 seat venue away from the major cities.
“It takes serious money to put a top act on tour. If a medium sized venue, probably in midweek, fitted into their schedule, it would get serious attention, “I was told.
Until Ayr gets its act together – few acts will be getting it together in Ayr.
I was on the 16.27 Rod Rail Express from Ayr to Killie on Friday – it was full of excited fans, drinking, singing, laughing... and one woman painting her toe- nails.
The pubs in Kilmarnock were jumping – and the houses around Rugby Park were holding assorted Rod garden parties and barbeques.
The show itself was great – even though my section of the Frank Beattie stand could hear his singing ok... but not a single word of what he was saying between songs!
At 71, Rod is wearing well. He can still kick a football further than some people at Rugby Park!
It was a great Knight on the town.
Sadly – for me anyway – it was just the wrong town!
There have been some well intentioned attempts to put Ayr on the music map
