Can your fitness class be the new social outing?

Time is everything when you manage your fitness

trimmed themselves down to 45 minutes, 30 minutes and eventually 20 minute blocks.

Let’s face it, the ultimate quick fitness fix has got to be 4 minute Tabata sessions, and the only reason we don’t see Tabata on gym timetables is it’s hard to get the great British public to shell out for what is essentially a class that lasts for 240 seconds.

That’s not to sat that Tabata isn’t effective, it is.

If done properly, Tabata can boost your metabolism and really give your fitness regime a good kick in the gluts.

However, as we look towards shortening the amount of time we spend working out, are we starting to forget some of the more fundamental reasons that we exercise in the first place?

Sure we exercise to lose weight and tone up, but what about the other reasons that we do exercise?

For many of us, one of the most important aspects of fitness is the social interaction and group camaraderie that we experience when we attend classes or the gym.

For many of us, the fitness class is often the core of their social life.

The regularly scheduled weekly, or more frequent class, is a place to go and hook up with friends and catch up with what’s been going on since last weeks class.

Human beings are hard wired to be social and acceptance and inclusion is a major motivating factor in our social behavior.

For many of us a drink at the local will fill that role, for others it will be the bowling alley or the bingo hall. It’s the same at the fitness class. Like minded people will attend the class and find they are in a place where they can do something they enjoy with a group of people who are there for the same reason.

As the weeks and months go by, people will make friends or just acquaintances, some may never actually make that leap but the end result is still feeling comfortable with people who are generally in the same boat as each other and sharing what should be a fun and energizing experience.
