Storm go all out at Stirling show

Full weekend schedule for boys and girls

- Danny Gibbons

Ayr Storm flew the flag when they headed to the Basketball Scotland National Challenge for U10 players.

Storm was the only West region club who entered both the girls and the boys’ events over one weekend in Stirling.

On the opening day, the boys struggled against Falkirk Fury and lost only by one basket to City of Edinburgh.

In the afternoon bronze grouping, coaches Chris Morrison and Sean Smyth were pleased with the progress over the day and the effort they put in right to the final whistle of the final game.

The girls were in action the following day when a narrow loss to Stirling who went on to win the U10g National Challenge, was followed by four wins. This meant the girls finished fourth overall, having won the silver group.

Coaching team Fallon Casey and Dave Hulme were proud of the team’s effort.

Fallon said: “A couple of the girls have been training and playing with the U12 girls in RDL this season – and that meant they were used to playing against taller and stronger teams. It was a great team effort to finish fourth.”

Like the boys, this was achieved despite not having regular access to train in baskets of the correct height for their age group.

Organisers had a tough task in selecting an all star five from each day – on Sunday, Storm’s Alix McIntosh was selected to the team, a proud moment for Alix, her watching family and coaches and the club.

Alix, while still U10, has made it into the Scotland U11g development squad.
