Time to solve Helen mystery

Watch turns up in charity shop

- Stephen Houston

Eighty years ago, she was a lady who obviously did much for her village.

Now the gold- plated watch presented to a Helen Mitchell has turned up in a charity shop.

Ayr hardware king Amar Singh, 57, found it while in the Ayrshire Hospice outlet round the corner from his Main Street emporium.

He snapped it up for £ 2.50 and later took it to a jeweller who valued it at £ 100.

The watch was presented to Helen Mitchell from the girls of Ballantrae WRI back in 1936.

It appears to have been Swiss made, where all the best timepieces come from.

Amar, proud proprietor of Bob Saver Hardware, said: “I would love to hear the story of Helen Mitchell if anyone knows.

“The watch was in a tired and grubby state and I had to clean it carefully to see the inscription.”

He is hoping Ayrshire Post readers can track down Helen’s family so he can present the watch to them.

Dad- of- three Amar, who has run his business in Main Street for 22 years, is passionate about family and he is among five generations of Singhs who called Glasgow home from 1924.

He said: “I could easily have made a quick £ 100 but handing it back to Helen Mitchell’s family is worth more than that to me.

“With any luck Ayrshire Post readers can help return the watch to its rightful home.”
