Sound advice from an American pro

-

I think it was before the Troon Open of 2004 when I joined some journalist pals for a round at Prestwick St Nicholas.

The starter approached us and asked if we’d mind letting a young American professional tag along with us. He wanted to sample an Ayrshire course before final qualifying for Troon started the next week.

This guy was a revelation. One of our party, Brian, was a big hitting low handicap golfer – and the American was hitting it further than Brian went on his holidays.

Over a beer later, we tried to coax some tips from him.

He told one of the lads that he needed to practise golf shots - and not just play a round.

“Hit twenty one irons, then twenty two irons – work right through the bag,” he said.

For another, he advised a wider stance and for a third, he suggested practising with his righthand in his pocket.

“Make the left arm do all the work,” he insisted.

After another beer, I was miffed he still hadn’t mentioned my swing.

Eventually, I had to ask, “You’ve seen me play – any tips for me...?”

The American took a long swig, looked thoughtful and eventually put his bottle down on the bar.

“Bob, I have one great tip for you ... never EVER, EVER, EVER play anyone for money!”
