Troon backs female members
£ 200 plus.
And I could line up dozens of friends who live locally, enjoy golf... but won’t be heading forTroon.
“I’d love to go... but not at those prices,” they tell me.
It’s a sad day when the Open is closed to so many.
My first Open was at Troon – my dad took me to the FREE admission practice day and at seven- years- old I could barely see over some of the whin bushes.
It was 1962 and I recall a man hitting short irons with such accuracy that his caddie fielded them out the air with one hand and dropped them into a bucket in the other. “That’s Gary Player, son...” Also on the practice ground was a man with a swing that seemed to break every rule my dad was trying to coach his golf daft offspring.
“Arnold Palmer will beat him,” I predicted.
“Son, that IS Arnold Palmer,” said the old man.
Palmer was the reigning Open champion – and after Troon in ’ 62 ... he was still reigning.
His winning score was 276 – 12 under par – and I’ll wager £ 50 to Malcolm Sargent House that a similar score will put you in the top FIVE finishers at Troon 2016.
I’ll also be having a wee financial interest in Colin Montgomerie.
To win it would be a miracle – but I’ll be asking what the bookies will offer on Monty being the highest placed Scot!
And whether you’re watching at home, in the pub or behind the ropes – enjoy it!
