Binmen plan three months of strikes

- Stuart Wilson

Another three months of bin strikes are set to hit South Ayrshire.

Workers have voted to stage one hour of walkouts ( 30 minutes per split shift) every day between next Monday and October 24.

Furious council bosses say residents are being “held to ransom” by the move.

It follows a six- week let- up in the industrial action that has dogged our streets during 2016.

Staff are pushing against the implementation of a new shift system which sees them working until 10pm.

Overtime bans and working to rule have remained in place during the summer, despite the lack of strike action.

But workers have now agreed to step up their action again in a bid to heap further pressure on the council.

The latest action follows a ballot of Unite members which saw 38 vote to contunue the strike – around 25 per cent of the overall waste management workforce.

Depute council leader John McDowall said: “This latest action is clearly not supported by the majority of our workforce and I hope this is reflected in practice next week.

“I’m sure the public, who are the ones that are essentially being held to ransom and will suffer as a result of any action, will struggle to see why this further action is necessary with things going so smoothly over the past two months.”

Council bin boss Mike Newall said: “We’ll be working to maintain service delivery as much as possible during this next phase of strike action and I can reassure our residents and customers that we’re doing everything we can to ensure any missed bins will be picked up within 48 hours.”
