A77 speed plan before bosses

- Stuart Wilson

Road safety chiefs insist they have NOT slammed the brakes on drivers using the revamped A77 near Symington.

Transport Scotland says it remains their intention to lift a 50mph restriction on the run between Bogend Toll and Dutch House roundabout.

More than £ 10million was spent upgrading the danger stretch, with works completed ahead of schedule in May 2014.

But the 50mph zone has remained in place – despite promises it would lifted upon completion of the safety scheme. We told earlier this year how public objections had slowed the return of the 70mph limit.

And the concerns are being taken so seriously that Transport Scotland bosses are now paying visits to the site to rubber stamp any changes.

A spokeswoman said: “In December 2015, we published draft orders proposing restoring the national speed limit on the A77 between Bogend Toll and Dutch House roundabout.

“In response to these proposals, we received 18 formal objections.

“We are currently considering the issues raised as well as meeting with objectors and undertaking site visits.

“Once these investigations are complete we will discuss our findings with the objectors and, thereafter, consider how best to proceed.”

Police officer Keven Lowe, from Ardrossan, was killed after a collision on the road near Symington in 2006.

After his death the government announced the slower restriction.

His death and a high number of accidents provoked public calls for action, with the road network in the area rebuilt.
