Communities boosted
More than 20 community groups have landed a share of £ 10,000 as part of a new funding pot.
Voted for by the public, the winning causes were put forward at an ‘ Ayr North Decides’ event.
Council bosses say the ‘ Participatory Budgeting’ approach is helping communities choose where their cash goes.
Groups were able to pitch before an audience vote took place to fully fund 18 of the groups up to £ 500, with three runners- up being awarded £ 373 each.
Among the projects to benefit are a refurbished therapy room for people living with cancer, walking netball for pensioners and a project for helping Syrian refugees settling in South Ayrshire to contact their families back home via the internet.
The money was made available from the South Ayrshire Health and Social Care Partnership and Scottish Government.
The aim is to let communities decide which local projects get funding.
The council’s social care spokeswoman Rita Miller, who chaired the event, said: “The broad range of projects funded demonstrates how varied local needs can be and I am sure this money will help to make a real difference to the groups that were awarded funding.”
