Smugglers’ fun

- Smugglers’ Festival

Smugglers’ Festival bosses are thrilled by the success of this year’s events – and say there’s even more to come in August.

For the first time, the festival has taken place over three months and has already showcased a host of successful events.

A smugglers’ road trip from Stranraer to Girvan followed in the footsteps of 18th and 19th century smugglers, while children from Ballantrae Primary have launched a book of smuggling stories.

And more than 500 people have visited the Smugglers! exhibition in Girvan’s McKechnie Institute.

Andy McAlpine from the festival’s organising group said: “We wanted to move away from the idea that our Smugglers’ Festival had to be over a number of consecutive days in August.

“We are delighted with the response to the Road Trip, the Childrens’ Book, the exhibition and the ‘ smuggling trails’.

“Now it’s time to turn our attention to four events in Ballantrae in August.

“We look forward to the return of the fabulous tall ship La Malouine – the added bonus for us this year is that ITV are planning to film her, and her involvement in our Smugglers’ Festival.”

This month, the tall ship lands in Ballantrae Bay on Friday, August 5, followed by the Strongman Challenge on Saturday, August 6, with teams competing for the top prize.

On Saturday, August 13 the King’s Arms in the village hosts a Smugglers’ Supper before the Ballantrae Smuggler’s Chase on Sunday, August 14, with crews of smugglers in skiffs competing for the trophy.

Details of all the events can be found at www. ballantrae. org. uk/ smugglers.
