Why mum’s the word for Jenny

Best- selling writer pens a new story

- Kenny Smith

Her books have sold over 2.5 million copies worldwide - and now Prestwick’s J e n ny Co l g a n has turned to her ex p e r i e n ce o f wanting to be a mum for her latest short story.

As a writer of 16 bestselling romantic comedy novels, Jenny’s work has been translated into 25 languages, and won both the Melissa Nathan Award and Romantic Novel of the Year 2013.

But in recent years she’s been indulging her inner geek, by writing about her guilty pleasure - Doctor Who.

Jenny, a former St Margaret’s Academy pupil, is one of the writers of The Legends of River Song, a collection of five short stories featuring River Song, played by Alex Kingston - who is the wife of the Doctor on TV.

Earlier this year, Jenny wrote audio plays which starred David Tennant and Alex Kingston, but she was able to put her heart and soul into the short story, entitled Picnic At Asgard, based on a throwaway line from the hit BBC series,

Jenny told the Post: “I’d asked if I could write this one and they were kind enough to let me do it.

“River is married to the Doctor and they are in a stable relationship, so it occurred to me that at some point it would have crossed her mind to have children.

“To me, it’s an issue to consider as it’s something that nearly every woman will think about, if they want a baby - and it was important for me, as a woman, to address it.

“River is getting older, but she sees her husband is getting younger, with Matt Smith’s Doctor,

“As a character, she’s very gung- ho, and it would be easy to make her like a cliche with her big gun, but she’s very real to me.”

Jenny is currently busy with her next romantic comedy book.

She added: “I’m now working on the spring novel, but it can be quite tricky in the summer holidays when you husband is away working and you’ve got the children to look after. “But I get there!” The Legends of River Song is available in bookshops now, and is published by BBC Books.
