A lovely home in the golden rectangle of Ayr

- Stephen Houston

The south of Ayr town centre contains many hundreds of beautiful properties.

And there are some pockets that truly shout: “I’ve made it.”

One such address in the golden rectangle from the town towards Alloway and Doonfoot is Ewenfield Road.

Ewenfield is all high walls, hedges and privacy from passers- by.

Number nine is typical of that, and is well camouflaged by trees in season. It is has only just gone on the open market.

There are fine stone entrances for both cars and people between two mature chestnuts and which lead into a large cobbled area.

In the house you are greeted with a bright lobby, clad in light wood with a tiled floor. The fine wood panelling continues into the hall, matching the staircase.

The lounge is glamorous and huge, with the high ceilings and ornate plasterwork of the period.

The house, named “Carlock” has five bedrooms and agents Donald Ross Residential say it is “filled with character, charm and quality craftsmanship from a bygone era.”

This attached villa is spread over three floors and surrounded by walled gardens.

The dining room is entered via an archway from the 28 feet lounge.

All the room sizes are big - a 26 foot hall, 16 foot kitchen and a master bedroom of 21 ft 8ins and 12 foot ensuite.

Two of the other bedrooms are also more than 20- feet long.
