Bottle project to the rescue

-

Firefighters are delivering a lifesaver message in a bottle.

The bottle stores vital medical details so people’s health records are at the fingertips of the emergency services.

Residents keep the bottle in a fridge and put up special stickers alerting anyone who comes to their rescue.

The Rotary Clubs of Alloway, Ayr, Girvan, Prestwick and Troon and the Ayr & Prestwick Lions Club are behind the initiative.

Fire crews are now handing out the free containers as part of home safety visits.

Local station manager Derek Davidson said: “It is a simple idea but it saves lives.

“It will provide emergency services with vital details of illness, allergies, required medication, and appropriate emergency contact details of our more vulnerable members of the community.”

The project was launched last year and so far 10,000 have been handed out.

Lions Club Phiroze Mehta said: “The bottle gives you the means to alert the emergency services to important medical information and contact details, should an accident or sudden illness occur in our home.”

People complete the form inside, put it in the fridge and stick the labels on the fridge and front door.

The bottles are also available from pharmacies and doctor surgeries and dentists.
