Thug attacked man trying to help his gran

- Sarah Jane McDonald

A thug attacked a young man trying to protect his grandmother who had become concerned about a group drinking outside her flat.

Daniel Carson, previously of Telford Court, Troon, admitted battering his 22- year- old victim, punching him on the head and kicking him on the body, causing him to fall to the ground at Mill Street, Ayr.

Ayr Sheriff Court heard last week, the 24- year- old was was visiting his grandmother at her home when the incident took place.

Depute fiscal Scott Toal said: “The complainer noticed that his grandmother appeared to be uptight and she told him it was because of the youths who were drinking at the bottom of the path at her block. The accused punched the man, causing him to fall to the ground, punching him two or three times to the head. The complainer pushed him and managed to get away.”

Defending Carson, Steven Maxwell said: “Mr Carson was at the locus not just randomly but with the complainer’s grandmother’s neighbours.

“I do not think the grandmother was aware of that at the time.

“The complainer went to speak to Daniel but he did not know what it was about and took a swing.

“He had been drinking where he had unfortunately reached the stage that blows were being struck and this would have been different had alcohol not been involved.”

Sheriff John Montgomery sentenced Carson to complete 120 hours of unpaid work within six months.
