- Stephen Houston

The great homeopath Jan de Vries left £ 2.7 million in his will.

The pharmacist turned alternative medicine tycoon bequeathed his private estate to his wife Joyce and their four daughters.

Dutch- born Jan spent most of his life living in Troon and died last July aged 78.

His revered healthcare companies lives on after his death and two of his daughters - Janyn and Mhairi - remain involved in different aspects.

A u c h e n k y l e i n Southwoods remains the HQ of Jan de Vries Healthcare.

The will comprised of property in Troon and stocks and shares.

As a new pharmacy graduate, Jan de Vries held a firm view on homeopathy. It was, he declared, for “old wifey sorts, spinsters and vegetarians”.

What changed his mind and set him on a course to becoming the homeopathist of choice for a long list of celebrities was a chance meeting in 1958 with Alfred Vogel, a naturopat h f rom Switzerland.

Vogel asked: “Do you believe in homeopathy?” De Vries responded “No. I am in pharmacy. I’ve just come out as the best graduate of the year.” Vogel observed: “You must have a very small mind.”

He quickly built a reputation after setting up a clinic in Troon mansion Mokoia, in Crosbie Road, in 1970.

Jan’s Scottish wife Joyce had inherited the property, and it proved the perfect base to launch a natural therapy business.
