Time to talk about tints and colours

-

Avoir L` air en pleine forme, translation is quite simply, to have good looking hair and it’s hard to think about hair colour these days without one brand coming to mind. L’oreal Paris from its humble beings in a French chemist shop was developed and sold to Paris hairdressers back in 1907.

What a long way they have come, a company now worth billions of pounds and respected worldwide with a portfolio of tens of dozen of products and a reputation that’s now trusted the world over.

Now, as many of you know, hair colour is quite a specialised craft with colour wheels under pigments and multi- tones not forgetting all the up keep to maintain healthy looking.

Even the shop bought colour ranges come in quite a confusing range of boxes ranging from 8A 9B 10C, the list goes on.

If you are trained well this is child’s play but to a let’s just buy this and have a go as the model on box is simply stunning with her soft silk honey locks.

Oh and 20 minutes in and you hope that you will look the same as the model on said box.

I wonder how many of you are remembering the shampoo- ing off- putting hair in a turban and boy honey blonde, more like Bombay tartan if there ever was such a thing.

Thankfully we now have 24 hour supermarkets so baseball hats on and straight out to buy another box, this time maybe a brown and hopefully not destroying, the white towels or getting it on the wall.

Hair colour is a messy business and there is a reason why hair stylists wear black aprons and gloves and you are wrapped up in a black towel and I can honestly say once when I was making a coffee for a client on my return I screamed “how on earth did you get tint on your chin?”

Her eyes just rolled and I remained baffled, even now, as to what she was touching for this to happen.

I myself did have a mishap in a 5 star hotel on the night of the Scottish Baftas.

How they would ever have managed to get that red hair colour out of a cream carpet is beyond me.

A few common mistakes are firstly that an ash blonde sure a few times in and I know feel drab Martin, I would like to be a beige blonde although, most skins types are beige so it looks bland unless a few highlights are added to brighten it up.

Blonde hair with brown eyes looks slightly odd as most fairhaired people are pale skinned with green or blue eyes.

It’s not uncommon for natural red- haired folk too colour their hair black which i feel is such a shame as red hair is so unique and stunning.

I guess it’s the old bullying that goes on, you can say someone is a guest or fattest but also a colourist ,

Another big mistake is ladies of a certain age going with the blue- black its just so wrong on so many levels and requires too much make up to make it work, high maintenance comes to mind.

I can recall once a client once sitting with colour developing with a tint bowl in front of her so she helped herself to an eyebrow tint and it was one of the funniest things I had ever seen as she left salon with stained skin and eyebrows twice the size.

If there is one bit of advice i can share it’s remember it’s hair and can’t be grown back in a week, so go to a professional and look the best you can with in your budget.

Next week the gorgeous Cheryl Cole and how to achieve a bit of her glam factor for autumn have a super week every one, Martin.
