Top US singer’s folk club date
Craigie Village Hall American songstress Debra Cowan will be the latest guest at Craigie Folk Club.
The singer will perform in Craigie Village Hall, by Kilmarnock, on Saturday, October 1 with organisers delighted to welcome a performer of the calibre of Debra.
She grew up in America idolising Julie Andrews but discovered English folk music in her teens through a love of Jethro Tull and Steeleye Span.
She continued her voyage of discovery by uncovering great singers such as Maddy Prior and Scotsman Ray Fisher, and in 1997 lived in Edinburgh for six months where she learned the art of unaccompanied singing and gained a residence at the capital’s famous Sandy Bell’s bar.
In 1998 she returned to America and now makes her living as a full time performer, touring extensively from her home in Massachusetts.
Debra performs traditional and contemporary songs, both unaccompanied and with guitar, concentrating on ballads covering a range of stories and emotions.
Her Craigie performance is the only Scottish date on her British tour.
The event is unlicensed, so audience members should bring their own refreshments and glasses, with tea, coffee and cakes available at the interval.
The evening begins at 8pm, and tickets costing £ 10 are available from Dave on 01369 840404 or Lorna on 07899978736.
