People who make a real difference

-

They are everyday heroes who make a huge difference without a fuss.

But one church decided to launch a search to find the big hearted folk who are hidden in our community.

A young carer, a football mentor, and fundraising champion were just three of those discovered by New Life Church in Prestwick.

Congregation member Heather Thomson said: “We decided to nominate people in the community who are hidden but make a big difference. We approached community councils and different organisations to get names put forward.

“They do good deeds out of the kindness of their heart. We wanted to show people they are appreciated.”

They were all presented with a box of Heroes chocolates and a trophy.

Here they are lined up during a special celebration held at the weekend:

Sharon and John Stobbs took over South Ayrshire Autistic Society seven years ago. They give so much of themselves to make a difference for other families and individuals living with autism.

Emma McRoberts is a young carer for her big sister. She goes above and beyond to help her big sister while facing her own challenges.

Johnny Stewart has raised thousands of pounds for London’s Great Ormond Street hospital. His younger brother underwent life threatening surgery at the hospital and Johnny wanted to say thank you.

Councillor Hugh Hunter received the award on behalf of Dementia Friendly Prestwick. Michelle Millar was initially nominated after setting up the group, which supports those affected by dementia. She wanted everyone involved in Dementia Friendly Prestwick to be recognised and not just herself.

Community stalwart Archie Monkhouse has been involved in many events in Prestwick. He gives up his own time and efforts in order to run these exciting events for young people.

Joe McGil has been involved in many local football teams as well Prestwick Gala Week. He is known as Papa Joe and has a reputation of being a friendly and fair man. He has been praised for being a great example and help to many young football players.

Prestwick North Community Council chair James Ronney contributes to help Prestwick fulfil it’s great potential and is involved in many projects.

Congregation members John Rollo, Darren Kelly, Gary MacDonald, Deborah Msipha, Lyndsey Smith and Heather Thomson were all at the event.

They want to say thanks to everyone who helped with the event. Jim Smith is the Pastor of New Life Church.
