Effect of care homes closure

- Stuart Wilson

The closure of council care homes could shorten the lives of residents, their worried families have warned.

More than 50 beds are set for the chop as part of a review into South Ayrshire’s last two local authority sites.

But relatives of those staying at Ayr’s South Lodge and Girvan’s Hillcrest say the move would “limit” the life expectancy of their loved ones.

Marie Wilson said: “My mum has dementia and has been receiving fantastic care in South Lodge since January.

“She is 88 and any kind of move from these familiar surroundings at this time in her life would be extremely distressing.

“These are the most vulnerable people in society and need the appropriate care – anything less could just shorten their lifespan.”

Union officials who are

“It is for these reasons that South Ayrshire Council need to provide reassurance to residents, families and employees and invest in these two care homes so that the high quality of care that is currently being provided will continue to do so in the years to come.”

Council bosses said a “strong response” to their review has been received so far.

Councillor Rita Miller, chair of the Health and Social Care Partnership Integration Joint Board, said: “The discussion was constructive and the feedback we’ve had back so far is providing invaluable information that will be considered as part of the review.

“With a range of options being considered no final decision has been made at this time, and I would urge anyone with an interest in these two care homes to contact the review team as soon as possible.”
