Where are our local heroes?

Do we really want ‘ big’ names?

-

factor bring more shame than fame?

If we can’t afford even “B” listers... should we be spending our hard earned cash even deeper down the alphabet?

No- one is expecting Biffy Clyro – albeit from Kilmarnock – but undoubtedly the only contemporary “A” listers that Ayrshire has to its name.

Mind you, it would be interesting to know if anyone asked Simon, James or Ben if they could swing by, flick a switch and pose for a few thousand selfies!

My option would be to keep the kids happy with a proper Santa – ie: someone who didn’t get their red suit and beard in Aldi for a tenner – to officially turn the lights on.

Let’s face it, Christmas is all about the bairns – and if you’re under five, Santa is the biggest “A” lister on the planet!

Then get on with the entertainment from local bands and performers.

But there’s no getting away from the sad fact that South Ayrshire doesn’t really have any home grown “celebs” anymore!

Back in the day, we’d have flocked to see Dr Finlay himself – Dunure born Bill Simpson who was ‘ Dr Dreamy’ before Bridget Jones was even born!

Glen Michael would have been another local “celeb” – certainly for the kids. And Sydney Devine and Ally MacLeod became huge local heroes with the crown- pulling factor.

The last “big thing” locally would have to be the 2006 X Factor duet, the MacDonald Brothers.

Love them or loathe them – well, they were Killie supporters! – they could at least sing and play several instruments.

Which is two skills more than Honey G and the other trash on the 2016 version of this fading show.

And finally – there’s always a finally – one local businessman stopped to ask me if Ayr’s tired and lacklustre lights were worth even turning up to see turned on in the first place?

But I’ll save that for another column...
