Breast best at United

- Stuart Wilson

Breastfeeding mums have been signed up by Ayr United as part of a nationwide first.

The Championship club is throwing open its terraces in a bid to prove more attractive for young families.

United become Scotland’s first side to officially sign up to the NHS- backed breastfeeding scheme.

It means female footie fans can feed at Somerset Park, safe in the knowledge they are welcome to do so.

In just over a year, more than 170 venues across Ayrshire and Arran have joined the scheme.

All NHS Ayrshire & Arran buildings, local authority offices and public transport buildings have signed up, as well as various cafes, restaurants, libraries, nurseries and opticians.

Under the Breastfeeding etc. ( Scotland) Act 2005, it is illegal to stop a mother feeding her baby breast or formula milk in premises where the public has general access.

Ruth Campbell, consultant dietician in public health nutrition, said: “It is great to see Ayrshire businesses leading the way by taking steps to change perceptions about breastfeeding in public.”

United have signed up both their stadium and Ally MacLeod Hospitality Suite to the official breastfeeding network.

Commercial chief Graeme Miller said: “We’re delighted to lead the way with this initiative and help provide a more welcoming atmosphere for all of our fans.”
