Church N ews Healthy boost from singing

Choir with a difference at St Leonard’s

-

Hark the choir who are singing their hearts out for the good of their health.

The congregation at St Leonard’s Church have established a singing for fun choir.

Learner crooners are welcome and the first song will be You Cannae Shove Your Granny off a Bus.

St Leonard’s member and former GP Neil Beattie said: “It has been proved that there are significant proven health benefits, both physical and mental, as a consequence of singing in a choir.

“This is not a choir just for singers – we hope some will come along – but it is specifically aimed at people who would consider themselves as non- singers.

“You do not need to be able to read music or have any choral experience. You’ll still get all the benefit from the singing.

“We will not be taking life too seriously – our first song will be “You Cannae Shove Your Granny off a Bus. The whole emphasis is on enjoyment.”

The first vocalist session will take place on Thursday, November 17 at 8pm to be held monthly.

It is open to everyone not just church members.

Organist Morag Walton has volunteered as musical director.

Dr Beattie said: “I heard about the health benefits of singing on the radio and researchers have looked into the science of it. Singing produces endorphins - the same hormones released during exercise - which are of great benefit.

“Anything people can do for themselves naturally to keep themselves physically and mentally fit is great.”
