It’s no secret when it comes to hair care and styling that many do find it a mind field with so many products and styling tools available but ultimately they all end up in the back of the cupboard when you can’t master the wave promised by a hot styling tool or the conditioner that didn’t transform your locks with one use so I will share with you this week and next - some trade secrets.

As hairstylists say it’s all in the cut , and we are right on this one as artisans , a great cut will be the foundation to a great hair style , and alas sometimes six weeks will not be enough time to correct a bad one so if you have this misfortune befall you patience is a virtue as they say so step one is your cut and I know just how confusing it can be for some of you.

Often said to me is I’d like lots of layers but I’d also like to keep the length “or shown a photograph of a style which has a different hair type and face shape on the model , so ultimately you need a style to suit your face structure and hair type . a consultation with your stylist will sort this for you , so off you go looking fab what now , well hair is made of the same proteins as your nails and skin , so it needs to be cleansed and conditioned regularly

I know they say that if you don’t wash your hair after time it starts to clean itself , although I ‘ ve never met anyone that can confirm this fact so what you are using in the care of your hair is most important , as is your hair type.

Most clients have normal to dry hair with chemical services and hot styling , but then some also have oily roots but dry mid- lengths and ends if this is you , one tip would be to have a shampoo that you only massage in too scalp area then rinse out as a rich conditioning shampoo will only way down the hair so it would need re- washed the next day so take advice on your hair type when at your salon. It’s so tempting to pick up colourful bottles at the chemist, and with so much choice I can understand why it suits my decor , comes to mind also fine hair can’t take heavy conditioning treatments , as once again any body in the hair will be lost , a leave in conditioner will work wonders if you miss the conditioning rinse , now and again and less is more with this so a penny size is ample. Now the brush you use as so many get the size wrong when buying a new one . the smaller the barrel the tighter the effect will be , take time from the magazine to watch what size and styles of brushes are being worked with.

I know its awkward drying your own hair with the cables and the mirror and often one side sits better than the other so again have some section clips , and pin up your hair and take your time , for big body stand with your hair slightly lowered and blast the root area not for long though you want it partially dried , then add some styling products , mousse is more than likely the best choice , medium too strong hold works well hair gel drys to quick and can go sticky , so not the best , unless you have mastered styling your own or have a short spiky haircut and need some definition .

A vent brush is a must for most hair styles and you can’t go wrong with this for a good finish , and iI your hair dryer has a cool setting use it to set in body , and if you are going with some velcros to finish same rule applies as brushes , large will give body but not much curl and good root lift , and catch the ends in the roller as if it bends back on its self , it will create what we call fish hooks , and split ends , the crazy of over straightening is over thankfully as the damage that this causes is only repaired with scissors , so the cut , then good hair care products to suit your hair type , The correct size of brush or brushes , small sections , and a few hair clips and taking your time , this will help keep you looking salon fabulous till you return have a great week
