Seaforth shine in the mist

Ayr Seaforth athletes battled foggy conditions in the Liverpool leg of the UK Cross Challenge at Sefton Park.

In the U11 boys’ race over 1.9km, Brodie McGregor, who was making his first trip to the event, finished 19th from 70 in 7: 53. In the girls’ race, Iona Hubbard was 16th from 84 finishers in 7: 59.

Best finish in the U13 girls’ race over 3km came from Morven Hubbard who was 10th in 11: 25 followed by younger sister Islay who was 78th in 13: 08 from 147.

The boys’ race saw 162 fight it out with Alex Crooks 25th in 11: 05 followed by Euan Bell ( 49th) 11: 27 and Sam Drummond ( 97th) 12: 34.

From 139 runners in the U15 boys’ race over 3km, Scott Sprang ( 48th) in 10: 34 was followed by Greig Oakley ( 111th) in 11: 58. The U15 girls had 126 competitor­s and saw Rosie Davidson claim 26th in 11: 21 followed by Emma Frew 41st in 11: 40.

The U17 women ran over a 4.4km course and were followed by the U17 men over 5.5km. Caitlin Chilton was 76th in 20: 37 while Lewis Ross was 77th in the men’s race in 19: 16.

Athletes were then able to watch some top class competitio­n in the senior races with Scottish Olympic athletes Andrew Butchart and Calum Hawkins on view in a race which was won by Butchart.

Seaforth hosts the West District Championsh­ips at the site of the old Digital factory at Mosshill Estate, Ayr, on Sunday, December 4. The event is free to spectators with first race at 11.30am.

Thanks go to Centaur Properties who run the site and also to The Aberlour Children’s Trust who have both made the event possible. With just short of an amazing 1100 on the entry lists, it’s sure to be an excellent day of racing.
