Farewell to Hank a sporting giant

-

Ayr Cricket Club has lost a stalwart with the death of former captain and president Iain Johnstone at the age of 79.

A born leader, Iain was one of the club’s best ever players, playing 1st X1 cricket for 25 years before stepping down in 1976.

He was due to captain Ayr’s league winning team in 1960 and 1961 but graciously suggested that team- mate Jack Watson would be better suited.

A hard hitting batsman and astute reader of the game, Iain was an early team- mate of Mike Denness who went on to captain England after the pair attended a scouting camp at Fylde.

Iain was proud to captain a Western Union X1 against the MCC in 1974, the closest he got to a Scottish cap.

He was also no mean footballer and was in the Scotland schoolboys squad that played England at Goodison Park in the 50s.

As a striker, he played with Queen’s Park’s Hampden X1, Whitletts Vics and Crosshill.

Iain became a master baker to trade after leaving Ayr Academy. Fellow Ayr great

Ayr great Bruce Patterson, who starred for Scotland, said: “Great club man, fantastic mentor and totally dedicated to his boys – loved the way he always gave it to you straight – no sugar coating from Hank. RIP big man.”

Prestwick stalwart Allan Haggo added: “Really sorry to hear this awful news, a great Ayr man. Condolences from everyone at Prestwick CC.”

Former Ayr pro Matt Horne said: “RIP big Hank! Top man, will be missed.”

Iain is survived by Helen, sons Douglas and David, both of whom became leading players at the club, and grandsons Luke, Jake, Nathan and Aiden.
