The Force is strong and expensive for them both

Father and daughter all set to battle Jedi forces

- Stephen Houston

A sci- fi fan has splashed out £ 1000 to transform himself into the dark lord himself, Darth Vader.

And Alan Smith’s daughter Catherine is getting in on the Star Wars act too – looking great as a white armour clad Stormtrooper.

The family will be the star attractions at the premiere in Ayr of the new Star Wars movie Rogue One.

They will spend six hours this Friday in the foyer at Ayr Odeon making sure everyone stands in line.

In normal guise fun- loving Alan, 51, is a mental health nurse based at the Ailsa Hospital.

But he has now launched a new enterprise – a Starship Enterprise even – to capture some business entertaining adults and children alike.

Alan, of Dalmellington, and 24- yearold pub kitchen worker Catherine, will be on duty at the Odeon between 3pm and 9pm.

He said: “We are asking for donations for pictures with cinema- goers in aid of the Odeon’s charity the Scottish Association for Mental Health, which I thought very appropriate.

“To have the Darth Vader gear is wonderful, but it is very expensive investment.

“I have a breathing device attached to the mask, but if I want to go for the fully digital voice that is another £ 200. It is going to be fun and I look forward to perfecting the role and hope our authentic representation will enhance the experience for cinemagoers.”

Like many men his age he grew up with Star Trek and then Star Wars.

He hopes his new company Galaxy Blasters Entertainment will have wide appeal.

Alan has had acting roles in River City among others.

Of his new Darth Vader identity, he added: “My partner Emma is supportive, if not bemused.”
