Troon school junction to get safer

- Stephen Houston

It is probably the most tricky school junction in Ayrshire.

And at last, the entrance to Marr College in Troon is to be upgraded.

New traffic lights to manage cars and people will be installed for the first time.

The existing pedestrian crossing will be moved to the school junction, with an island in the middle.

And there will be a dedicating turning right lane into the school off Dundonald Road.

The rub is hold- ups are expected for ten weeks from January 17 as workmen move in.

The details emerged after Councillor Phil Saxton asked questions.

The junction is so dangerous as it is now built on a man- made hill over ther disused railway.

Councillor Saxton said: “This will be a major improvement but temporary traffic lights will be in place for ten weeks.”

Head of the Ayrshire Roads Alliance, Stewart Turner, added: “As part of the Marr College refurbishment the existing pelican crossing and un- signalled junction on Dundonald Road will be replaced with a fully signalised junction.

“This will provide improvements to the road network by enhancing facilities for all vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.

“The new dedicated right hand turning lane for traffic entering the school site will increase the overall efficiency of traffic movements, and the new signals will also allow vehicles to leave the school grounds much more easily as they enter Dundonald Road.”
