Get a party started in your hairstyle

I’m coming up so you better get this party started!

There won’t be very many of us who doen’t love a really good party, and what better time than Christmas to plan a social event.

And, of course, you have to think about your hair when it comes to a party or night out. There seems so much more pressure at this time of year to look your ultimate best.

There’s nothing like a good gettogether with family and friends, and even work colleagues at the office party. It would not feel like Christmas without a good knees- up and we Scots have a worldwide reputation for enjoying a party now and again.

Having helped a friend this week plan and organise her get- together, I understand more about what is involved.

And boy, I can’t believe the work involved, but it’s lots of good fun too.

It was good swapping hair tint gloves for food preparation ones and dealing with a kilo of smoked salmon being delivered for the bash.

As for hair for your festive bash, this is possibly the one time of the year you can go all- out. I’m talking big, bouncy blow- drys, because, in the words of the fabulous Dolly Parton: “If anyone says your hair is way too big, just walk away.”

If you are going for a fullbodied up- do, often worn by Harry Potter actress Emma Watson, then the key here is to get plenty of texture into your hair before crafting the messy bun. Tong your hair all over first, and use some dry shampoo for a matte texture.

If you want the slicked- back vamp look nailed then it is the volume which proves much sexier than a flat- to- the- head wet look. Straighten your hair by lifting it away from the roots, then softly backcomb sections for height.

Sexy siren waves are a classic party look. Try a low side parting and sweep your hair ( tonged in large sections, all in the same direction) over one shoulder.

A sleek bun looks uberpolished. Use straightening irons to get your hair sleek and shiny. Pin half of your ponytail into a bun and with the remaining sections, wrap them around it in the opposite directions. Shine spray is your must- have.

You could opt for a half- up hair- do a hairstlye that has 60s sex kitten written all over it. A bit of backcombing at the crown, loose waves at the back and a grown- out fringe are the makings of this classic style.

A braided bun is child’s play. Simply plait three ( or more, depending on your hair’s thickness) sections of your ponytail and swirl them into a bun, one on top of the other.

You may want to try a sleek down- do. Smooth over your hair with the stylers and pin back the front sections for some added interest. As it’s Christmas, go glitzy on the clips to show off a party from the back.

If you’ve got the hair for it, pile it high like pop star Rihanna with random curls tumbling down from a ponytail and pinned back to the head. To get the body, cheat with extensions or use a volumising powder for instant oomph.

A bob is anything but boring. It can look slick and stylish and with some movement created by heat styling – and proves the wet trend looks on point against metallic accessories and glossy makeup.

So go for it girls, think big and bouncy.

And have a fabulous party season, I know I will certainly try to look my best before I hit the festive parties.

Now, that’s a different column.
