Scally vows: our fortune will turn

Ayr are devastated at Arabs’ smash and grab win

killing them. Ayr should have gone ahead in six minutes. Instead they went one behind.

Harkins looked set to score when he took a Paul Cairney free- kick on his chest and cannoned in a shot, only to see it blocked by Willo Flood.

The ball was quickly transferred upfield, where Obadeyi held off the grounded Nicky Devlin and walked the ball around Greg Fleming with Daryll Meggatt desperately trying to make up the yards.

Ayr were stung into a quick- fire response and Harkins watched in agony as his shot from a Devlin cutback was deflected over the top.

Cairney and Ross Docherty were just out with efforts before Ayr created the chance of the match after 37 minutes.

Docherty sent Devlin scampering down the right and the skipper’s low cross just screamed for a finishing touch from Jamie Adams, who was only two yards out.

The midfielder knocked the ball goalwards, only for Lewis Toshney to put in a great saving block at the expense of a corner.

The hectic pace of the first half could not be maintained and the game died for a while before reigniting late on.

Ayr won a series of a corners and put the Arabs defence under constant aerial bombardment.

Andy O’Connell had a shot tipped over while fellow sub Kevin Nisbet had a header pushed aside.

No one could have grudged Ayr at the very least a point and possibly all three but the streetwise Tangerines rode down the road with their unbeaten run stretched to 12 games.
