Can you rise to the Ayrshire College Bake Off challenge?
For the past couple of years, the College has been putting an Ayrshire spin on the hit BBC programme The Great British Bake Off - with their Ayrshire Bake Off evening classes.
With the full- time NC Bakery course proving a success, the College is now offering an Access to NC Bakery course which starts in January 2017.
Places on the course are already going like hot cakes, showing there’s a real appetite for baking in Ayrshire.
The course is running in Ayr and is the ideal preparation for anyone thinking about starting a career in this specialised industry.
Bakery student Lauren Westcott said: “The course has been going really well and I feel I am learning a lot from it.
“So far we have been focusing on different types of pastry, bread products, handmade chocolates and, most recently, our Christmas cakes that were sold last week.
“From this course, I’m going to go on to specialise in patisserie, and I would like to eventually work in London in a top hotel.
“I’ve been baking my whole life and this course is helping to make my dream job into a reality.”
Hospitality lecturer Stuart Fitzsimmons said: “As well as learning bakery techniques, the course includes learning about the science related to baking, chocolate confectionary, including how various ingredients work together.
“With opportunities ranging from working in supermarket bakeries, to working as a chocolatier, to baking artisan breads or working in the patisserie section of a 5 star hotel, thejobs in the industry are endless.”
Maggie Garrard, Curriculum Manager for Hospitality and Tourism at Ayrshire College, said: “The College has installed commercial bakery equipment, providing students with a real working environment to learn in.
“We are really excited to be offering the Access to NC Bakery course.
“The demand for craft bakers in the industry is on the rise, giving us the ideal opportunity to introduce this course.”
