Storm end their season on a high against Lady Rocks

- Danny Gibbons

After a tough first half of the season, Ayr Storm’s U18 women finished 2016 with a 71- 55 win against Lady Rocks in Scottish National League Division One.

Ayr opened the scoring with Erin Jones finishing off a move straight from the opening tip, and then never looked back.

Some breathtaking fast break play led by guards Petra Kurcikova and captain, Davee Sang, saw Storm open a 10 point gap at the end of the first quarter and 33- 17 at the half.

The teams continued to provide the watching crowd at Belmont Academy with end- to- end basketball, but the visitors stepped up their game, and an eight point run, including back- toback threes from Shannon Beattie and Valentina Palli, reduced the lead to 10 points.

Head coach, Laura Nisbet used the break at the end of the third to calm her troops and they returned to the court with the same intensity that they had begun the game.

Rebecca Morrison was unstoppable under the basket, and her 29 points was a game high. Along with Kurcikova’s 18 points, Ayr won by 16 points.

Laura said: “The girls really stepped up their game, both at our trainings and on court.

“The high tempo from the whole team, especially on defence, was great to see.

“The result gives us a much needed boost heading into 2017.”
