150A grand words new on bench panel to honour Broon the Troon rugby legend

-

Name in here A new designer bench in memory of British Lion rugby star Gordon Brown is to arrive in Troon within the next three weeks.

The wooden seat will replace three carved thrones that rotted away in the memorial garden

Legend Gordon - universally known as ‘ Broon frae Troon’ - died in March 2001 aged only 53 after a battle with cancer.

The wonderful memorial garden was created in a quiet corner next to the library.

The new bench is due to be delivered on February 16.

Councillor Peter Convery has worked with Gordon’s wife Linda in ensuring the bench is fitting.

He said: “There has been a lot of design work put into it to satisfy the family and they are quite happy with it.”

He conceded mistakes had been made when installing the original three seats which suffered rot, termite attack and vandalism.

Councillor Convery added: “They were not installed properly and there were different species that just chewed away at the wood.

“The council forester is willing to carve at least two lions in recognition of the British Lions tours. There may well be another rugby ball goes into the display at the same time.

“At the moment a survey is taking place in the memorial garden of all the plants. Everything is gradually coming into place, I know it has taken a long time.

“A new sump has also been installed and god willing everything will be in place and ready to go on show in mid March.”
