Ayr pier pressure

Experts check its safety

- Sarah Hilley

Ayr pier came under the radar during a probe by students.

The team have been carrying out a ground radar survey to check out its stablilty to withstand battering storms.

A team from Strathclyde University used specialist equipment at the south promenade last week.

Councillor Bill Grant said: “The pier must be hundreds of years old. And when you are old, you crack a bit. It is a popular vantage point for many, including locals, visitors and fishermen.”

The pier is South Ayrshire Council owned.

Safety railings have recently been installed along the south pier to make sure sightseers don’t slip into treacherous rocks below.

The welcome move was designed to deter tombstoning. A kid had to be rescued in 2014 after strong currents dragged him out during a tombstoning session.

Meanwhile a buoy washed up by a recent storm has been salvaged.

It broke free from its anchorage a couple of weeks ago during a stormy sea and was bobbing close to the Ayr coastline.

It has been transported temporarily to near the Waverley berthing point before it is returned to the sea.

Councillor Grant said: “People have been getting in touch concerned about the displaced buoy.”

An Ayrshire Roads Alliance spokeswoman confirmed the Ayr pier work had taken place a f t e r S t r a t h c l y d e University requested access to it

She did not reveal the findings of their efforts but confirmed it was not ordered by roads bosses.
