Foodbank continues to provide a vital lifeline for families

-

They have fed more than 15,000 people in South Ayrshire since 2012.

And now Foodbank volunteers want to teach those on the breadline to make their own meals.

The church- affiliated organisation run by the Christian Trussell Trust have taken delivery of portable stoves to deliver cookery lessons.

Foodbank manager Cathy Smith said: “We show how cheap it is to make a basic meal that is nutritious. We show them how to make soup, haggis burgers and bolognese.

“Some clients have never budgeted for food or learned to cook basic meals. Our volunteers hve trained to run a Can Cook Course from the NHS. The courses will take place in different areas where there are Foodbank collection hubs.”

Cathy said demand has soared again this year - with the Foodbank feeding 375 more people than during the same period in 2016.

Since New Year’s Day they have handed out three days worth of emergency food to 5,185 folk - 1,377 were kids.

As well as food vital toiletries and basic hygiene kits are distributed.

Cathy said: “Our boxes help them through a difficult time. Families are worried their children won’t eat. Some people are really embarrassed to ask for help.

“And I believe some people don’t come along because of the shame. But we can help them through until issues are sorted out and money comes through again.

“Our volunteers are hardworking and committed to making a difference to people who find themselves in crisis. They are often willing to go the extra mile as we saw in December when we took in more than nine tonnes of food and toys.”

Cathy wants to thank churches, schools individuals and other organisations who have donated generously.

The charity is looking for UHT milk, tins of vegetables, potatoes, custard, fruit, hot meals including mince, curry and chilli.
