Headteacher to raise cash for stroke victims

-

A kind head teacher is hoping to cross the finish line to raise awareness for her sister who suffered a stroke at just 35- years- old.

Gaenor Hardy, from Prestwick, plans to take part in the Stroke Association’s Glasgow Resolution Run on March 19 in a bid to thank the community for their support and to raise awareness on support for stroke victims, writes Sarah Jane McDonald.

To celebrate her fourth time taking part in the race, the Dalmilling Primary School headteacher will be joined by her colleagues and daughter, 11- year- old Erin on the big day.

On her latest charity mission, she said: “I am so excited to be raising awareness for Stroke Association again, I love running so to combine the two over the years has been fantastic, I’ve really enjoyed training in and around Prestwick.

“I enjoy running down the front next to the beach, it’s such an incredible view and I’m so lucky that my colleagues and staff from the education department at South Ayrshire Council are keen to get involved. I’ve got my principal teacher Jodie Thomson, teacher Garry Laird and my previous depute Ken O’Hara coming along with my friends and daughter who can’t wait to run on behalf of her auntie.”

“It was ten years since Fiona’s stroke in January this year, she had a successful job in London and was healthy, enjoying cycling and yoga and now lives with my parents in Prestwick.

“She has poor mobility and no speech and is unable to work, she really misses her friends and life in London but we are often so impressed by the support given in the local community in Prestwick and Ayr towards my parents and Fiona and I want to acknowledge this.

“I also believe that more should be known about strokes and by taking part in events like this, I hope to spread the message about the importance of fundraising to put money in place to support people like my sister.”
