Drive to ensure Ayr taxis comply

- Sarah Hilley

Police have clamped down on taxi drivers causing traffic chaos on an Ayr street.

Officers patrolled jammed Smith Street beside the town’s train station on Tuesday.

Residents have been complaining about the level of congestion and selfish parking by cabbies.

PC Geoff Robertson and Donna Scobie, of South Ayrshire Council, were checking taxi drivers adhered to their licences.

PC David Markin said: “Officers and the council’s licensing department were ensuring the road worthiness of the taxis.

“They were also disccusing the concerns which residents have such as parking too close to junctions making it difficult for residents to enter.”

The crackdown is part of a fiveweek road safety campaign.

Officers are zoning in on collision hotspots throughout South Ayrshire.

PC Markin said: “Our aim in the first instance is to educate road users and make an impact on road traffic collisions.”

Thirty- four drivers were fined in the second week of the road safety campaign.

Two uninsured vehicles were seized and 24 motorists were reported to the Procurator Fiscal for crimes on the road.

PC Markin said:“A key feature of this campaign is awareness raising and education and in addition to enforcement activity we will be taking the opportunity to speak to road users and local people about road safety in South Ayrshire.”
