Driver reversed into neighbour

Pensioner trapped by hairdresser’s car

- Sarah Hilley

A hairdresser who accidentally drove over an 84- year- old man has kept her licence by the skin of her teeth.

Mum- of- two Jacqueline Martin, 31, was reversing her Mercedes when she hit neighbour Thomas McKissock leaving him with a broken rib and cheekbone.

The impact knocked the pensioner to the ground - and then Martin ran over him outside her James Campbell Road home in Ayr.

Depute fiscal Scott Toal told the court Martin had just put her child into the Mercedes A class on April 25, 2016 and Mr McKissock was out for a walk.

Mr Toal said: “The accused reversed and struck Mr McKissop at slow pace. She continued to reverse and reversed over Mr McKissock.”

A passerby frantically flagged for the blonde to stop the car.

Trapped McKissock had blood pouring from injuries and was begging for the car to be lifted from him. Firefighters and police officers rushed to the scene and hoisted the vehicle off him.

He was in hospital for two days and his injuries includeds cuts to the forehead, a broken rib and cheekbone and abrasions on his hands, elbows and knees.

Lawyer Ian Gillies said single mum Martin was devastated by the incident.

She had failed to check her mirrors. He said: “This has been a traumatic experience not just for Mr McKissock but also for Mrs Martin.”

The elderly man with a walking stick stoops and is quite a short, said Mr Gillies.

The court heard earlier how Martin’s home was bordered by a high hedge so she was unable to see Mr McKissock coming.

He continued: “The lady just didn’t see him. She couldn’t be more sorry. I was a moment’s inattention.”

Mr Gillies said the accident had “dreadful consequences” but Mr McKissock will be compensated through insurance.

Martin is a mobile hairdresser and relies on driving to get to clients.

Sheriff Mhairi Mactaggart told Martin: “I am not going to disqualify you because your children will lose the support.” She handed Martin eight penalty points. If she acquires one more - she will lose her licence as she already had three. Martin was also fined £ 450. Martin admitted driving without due care and attention and failing to take proper observations, check her mirrors when reversing, causing Mr McKissock to fall to the ground and then running him over.
