School pupils unite to celebrate festival of Burns

The three primary schools in Maybole are joining together to celebrate Burns Heritage as part of the Maybole 500 project.

Pupils of Cairn, Gardenrose and St Cuthbert’s will present their songs and poems in the Town Hall on Friday ( February 17) from 1.15- 2,30pm and the event is free to everyone.

Maybole 500 is the name given by Maybole Community Council to the project celebratin­g the 500th anniversar­y of the town being created a Burgh of Barony.

The project is working with young and older people in Maybole and North Carrick and will run until August this year and will celebrate the area’s rich heritage and history.

It will be exploring everything from Robert the Bruce to Robert Burns, from Buildings to Boot and Shoemaking, Eisenhower to Prince Charles, Earl of Carrick.

The hope is that everyone in the town and North Carrick will get involved and enjoy events which will include a Lantern Parade - including music and a burning wicker statue in the Glebe on March 25 - a Picnic in the Park with Jousting at the Glebe on June 4, a Pageant with historical costumes during Maybole Gala on June 10, and an Exhibition looking at the history and heritage of Maybole’s landmark buildings in July.

The lantern procession will be organised by Carrick Rural Arts Group and they are looking for two part- time arts/ crafts project Assistants but the deadline is this Friday, February 17 at 5pm.

The group wants to employ two freelance artists/ workshop assistants to help deliver a series of Lantern Workshops in schools and community halls for the Maybole 500 Lantern Procession on March 25.

The workshops will be held throughout the week including some weekends and evenings and post duration is from February 25 until March 26.

With an arts/ crafts background and an interest in local history, those interested will have good practical 3D making skills, a keen interest in performanc­e and be looking for experience of community arts work.

Working as part of the project arts team, they will have the opportunit­y to develop their work practice and contribute artistical­ly to the delivery, design and production of the Maybole 500 Lantern Procession.

Previous experience of Community Engagement would be beneficial.

Duties include lantern making, preparatio­n and assisting with school and community workshops and delivery of the finale performanc­e. Flexible hours, evening and weekend working.

Fee for four weeks’ project is £ 1,000 on a self- employed basis. This position may be subject to an Enhanced Disclosure Scotland Certificat­e.
